The most popular time of the year is the B.A.A Marathon Weekend. We have an entire page on that. Other events that attract many New England Deads are: Town & Country 10 Miler in Amhesrt, Massaachusetts, in late February. After the race many deads gather at Judie's Restaurant for a great meal. Hilly course, great tradition. Boston Marathon Crewed Run. On a chosen Sunday about 4 weeks before the Boston Marathon a group of local Dead Runners meet at the Newton City Hall (mile 19). Some of the Deads are there to run, others are there to provide support in the form of friendly faces, water, transportation, and Gatorade. The latter group is the crew. The crew takes the runners out to the starting line in Hopkinton and then proceed to their first designated support location. The crew keeps leapfrogging and we attempt to provide support at each mile (usually 22 or 23 miles). After the run there is always breakfast. James Joyce Ramble (10k), Dedham, Massachusetts, in late April. A large race, often the New England 10k Championship. Highlights of the race included actors in period costumes reading lines from James Joyce at each mile marker and one of the best tee shirts given in a New England road race. Vermont City Marathon and Marathon Relay, Burlington, Vermont - Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. This race, both the relay and full marathon, is popular with dead runners from New England, New York and southern Canada. There is usually an encounter dinner the night before the race. Make motel reservations early. Applefest Half Marathon in Hollis, New Hampshire - first or second Saturday in October. The course is challenging, the foliage is in peak form, and the local farms have apples and pumpkins to pick. See Coolrunning for information on races. Write to the list if you plan to attend. |
