Canopic Jar
In ancient Egypt the Pharaohs, were very important to the Egyptians. In fact the Pharaohs were so important to the Egyptian people that they built tombs and pyramids for their Pharaohs. They did this to prepare the Pharaohs for their afterlife. The people of Egypt would put things in their tombs and pyramids such as furniture, jewels, ornate sarcophaguses (to put the pharaohs body in), and small containers called conopic jars. These small containers held the sacred organs of the Pharaoh. There are 4 different types of conopic jars, each holding a different organ. Each jar is made out of glass, and has a top that is shaped like an animal. There are 4 different bottles for 4 different animals for 4 different organs. Each head represented one of the 4 sons of Horus the sky god. Duamutef, who had a jackal’s head, protected the jar containing the stomach. Qebsenuef had a falcon head, and watched over the intestines. Imseti, the human headed jar, held the liver, and Hapi the baboon held the lungs.
