Chicago Encounter

Susan and I had a wonderful 11 day trip going through Chicago to Michigan and then back home.

The running highlight of the week was the Chris Zorich 5k race in Chicago, where we met Chicago area deads and won awards in our age divisions.

I asked Teresa Brobeck about Chicago races and she gave us several options. After we settled on the Zorich 5k, Teresa decided to promote a Chicago dead welcome for us. I had been telling Susan how she and Penny McCreight were neat people, and she was eager to meet them. I read posts by Fotorunner Tom on a race the week before; Prescott Balch wrote offering to run with us along the lake. We both looked forward to meeting them.

Unfortunately, we got lost when we arrived in Chicago Friday evening and ended up staying at a different motel of the same chain than the one we planned to stay at (we did not even realize it at the time.) Teresa was worried that something had happened to us when she called the motel we planned to stay at and was told we never showed.

The race itself was great. We love to run races in cities on days when the traffic is blocked off. We met the Chicago deads before the race and then ran it. Results were not posted anywhere, so we could only wonder if any of us won age group prizes. A little more than two hours after the race started, awards were announced. Penny, Teresa, Susan and I won prizes. Afterwards, we all had brunch across the street before dispersing.

Tom and Penny took us to a lake front concert Sunday evening. Thanks a bunch.

I should mention the awards. Everyone else won beauty products, but I got a $50 certificate to a men's store. The store was out of my league. I looked at ties - the cheapest was one on sale for $79. I looked at belts - the only ones my size were over $160. Finally, I located shirts on sale and one was $43. It was either that or 3 pairs of socks for $45, I took the shirt.
