Trip to Home Land

ORLANDO, Florida -- Susan and I have thought of a Florida vacation during our February school break for many years. This year Jacob was attending business school in Orlando so it seemed the perfect time. My parents live outside Orlando and so does my "little" brother whom I had not seen since 1972. I say "little" brother, because even though I know he is 44, in my mind he still appeared to be 17.

Susan's brother drove us to the airport Saturday morning. While waiting for the flight, we saw the area near the gate was crowded. After checking with a clerk, we knew there was a good chance we would get bumped. We did get bumped, which meant a cab ride to the Boston airport and a phone call to Jacob telling him we would be late.

We arrived late and had to get up at 4:45 the next morning to drive to Vero Beach for a 10k race. Orlando has many races, but we would miss them all. A large 12k race was held on the day we traveled and a 5k was to run on the day we departed for home.

The morning came early. Fog covered the swamps early in the morning, and we all thought of the moors from Hound of the Baskervilles, substituting an alligator for the hound.

Instead of racing in the 85 degree temperatures that I feared would happen, the high temperature for the day was near 50. While this was warmer than New Hampshire, I did not complain. I felt lucky.

Jacob had not been training much, and he had never run a 10k race before so he would run easy. The course was flat and I was happy with my time of 41:07. Susan ran a good race and Jacob looked like he was enjoying his run. As a bonus, Susan and I both won the 50-59 age group. Sometimes, not often though, just showing up is enough when you are over 50.

The remainder of the day was spent seeing the sites from my teen years back in the early 1960s. First, we drove to Dodger Town where I used to go see spring training. Then, we drove up the coast 30 miles to Indialantic, the beach I went to as much as possible after a day in high school. (If you saw the old photo of me with a surf board on my family page, that was taken in Indialantic.) A hurricane must have eroded much of the sand as it seemed much smaller than I remembered it. I can't blame a hurricane, but the town of Melbourne, my old house and the old high school seemed smaller too.

Jacob attended classes during the week, so Susan and I did some of the usual site seeing and spending time with my parents. Jacob loaned us his car which made getting around easy. On Wednesday, we had a few hours before meeting Jacob so we drove to the restaurant where my brother Gary is the manager. Would he be there? Would we have anything to talk about. After 27 years ......

Gary was there and we had a good time. It was easy for us to talk.

My father's birthday was the next day. We had a big dinner and I got to meet the rest of Gary's family.

On Friday, we drove to Tampa where I watched the Yankees at spring training. For lunch, we met Ray Eydmann, one of my virtual running partners, for lunch. Then we drove to Lakeland, where my parents lived when Susan and Dan visited them in 1986. We ran around a large lake on a hot afternoon.

Jacob drove us to the airport on Saturday morning. We are at home now after a great trip. We will use the free tickets we got for being bumped to visit again next year. Tomorrow, school begins again.
